Painting with Matisse

This workshop is an introduction to the painting style of Henri Matisse. I will guide you through the basics of oil or acrylic painting. From fundamental color theory for palette preparation and color mixing to a finished painting. We will look at techniques and tips to strengthen and develop confidence when using these mediums. We will also dive into color compositions. Our goal is for you to walk away with new tips and one painting per session ( 4 paintings total) and lots of beautiful studies.

My personal style is a contemporary approach to line study and gesture - it’s what comes naturally to me, but I encourage my students to experiment and work in developing their own style.

HOW IT WORKS:

Before the workshop starts I will send out a ZOOM invitation for all of our sessions. Each week I’ll email some reference images for us to work from. I will show you examples of concepts, techniques, forms, and examples of artists and their artworks. Then we sit and draw together. During class you can use the chat feature to comment or ask any questions. We can learn a lot from one another so it’s always wonderful to show your work to others. I love to make this workshop very interactive.

OUTLINE and WHAT YOU NEED:

Oil or Acrylic paint: Cadmium yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium red, Quinacridone red or magenta, Cobalt blue, Ultramarine blue, Burnt Umber, Titanium white and Ivory black., Gamsol or odorless paint thinner ( for oil painters), Mixing Palette or paper palette, palette knife, Brushes ( round and flat), 4 small canvases 9x12 inches, paper towels or rags.

Optional supplies: pencil, vine charcoal, thin sketch paper such as bond paper for initial drawings.
